Who is Private Training for?
Experience the benefits of personalized, one-on-one dog training in the comfort of your own home in the Marshalltown, IA area. Our flexible scheduling makes it easier than ever to train your dog on your terms. Select from the 4-5 week “Basic Obedience Course” or the as needed “Individual Sessions” to address your behavioral concerns. Let us help you and your dog thrive together!
Step 1: Initial Consultation
After you fill out the application for private in-home training lessons, we will reach out to you with the contact information you provided. We will gather any additional information we might need, give you time to pick up any training supplies you don’t already have on hand, and schedule a time to meet for the initial consultation. At the consultation we will:
Assess your dog’s behavior and obedience background
Set goals for what you want your dog to learn
Learn what training style is best for you and your dog
Determine which course is best!
Step 2: Determine Which Course is Best!
We offer two different private in-home training options. Hopefully after your initial consultation you have an idea of what will best suit you and your pet. The first is a full “Basic Obedience” course and the second is a tailored “Individual Session” course.
Basic Obedience Course ($400/course):
This comprehensive program typically consists of 4-5 weekly sessions, focusing on essential obedience skills and addressing common behavioral concerns. This course is for dogs of any age with any skill level. Examples of skills your pet can learn include
Hand targets, sit, down, stay, place, loose leash walking, leave-it, drop it/take it, and recall. We will also go over any behavioral concerns you might have and introduce some enrichment games. Other cues and behaviors can be added at the owner’s request.
Individual Sessions ($100/session):
Individual sessions are intended for dogs who have already mastered the commands described above in the basic obedience course. This could mean they developed a behavioral issue, such as jumping, chewing, nipping, etc., or that they know a command (such as stay), but you need help getting the pet to listen more consistently. These sessions are an hour long and meet as needed. Though these issues can take months to correct, the information you need to get started can often be addressed in 1-3 individual sessions. I encourage you to reach out and give me updates throughout the process and ask questions as they arise. Common behaviors addressed in these sessions include
Jumping, nipping, barking, digging, separation anxiety, resource guarding, potty training, car chasing, overexcitement, etc.
Improve recall over a distance, impulse control, and speed to respond.
Step 3: Scheduling your Training
Your customized training plan should be ready within seven days of your initial consultation. Training times are flexible and can be adjusted as needed!
How does it work?
What do you need for training?
The following is a list of items we recommend for private trainings, but every training plan is a little different; if you have any questions, don’t hesitate to reach out. If you are not sure where to find these things, click the links for some of our favorites!
We recommend trying 3-5 types of treats to determine what best motivates your dog. Examples include your pet’s kibble, soft and hard training treats, chicken, or cheese.
Flat collar or harness & 6ft leash
If you wish to teach loose leash walking.
Crates should be large enough for your dog to comfortably turn around and lay down, but not so large they can lay on one end and pee/poop on the other. Most crates come with dividers for growing large breed puppies!
